How Credit Card Interest Works in India
If you pay your full bill by the due date, you pay no interest at all. That is the interest-free period.
If you pay anything less, even if it covers the minimum due, the bank charges interest (called finance charges) on the unpaid amount. Rates are usually around 3% to 3.75% a month, which works out to roughly 36% to 45% a year. On top of that, you pay 18% GST on the interest.
Most banks also charge interest on new purchases from the day you swipe until the full balance is cleared. So carrying a balance makes every new purchase more expensive too.
How to Use This Credit Card Interest Calculator
- Outstanding balance: the amount you owe on your card today.
- Monthly interest rate: check your card statement or the bank's most important terms and conditions.
- You pay every month: the fixed amount you plan to pay until the balance is cleared.
The calculator shows how long you need to clear the balance, the total interest and GST, and what you would pay if you paid only the minimum due. It assumes you stop using the card for new purchases.
How Credit Card Interest Is Calculated
- Balance = what you still owe after your last payment
- Monthly rate = for example 3.6% (about 43.2% a year)
Example: ₹1,00,000 balance at 3.6% a month
- Interest for the month = ₹3,600
- GST at 18% = ₹648
- Total charge in the first month = ₹4,248
Banks calculate interest daily on your balance. This calculator uses a monthly estimate, so your bank's figure may differ slightly.
The Minimum Due Trap
The minimum amount due is usually about 5% of your bill. Paying it avoids a late fee, but it barely touches the balance. On a ₹1,00,000 balance at 3.6% a month:
Paying ₹10,000 a month costs ₹32,977 in interest and GST. Paying only the minimum due costs about ₹4.28 lakh, more than four times the original balance.
Pay More, Pay Far Less Interest
For the same ₹1,00,000 balance at 3.6% a month:
| You pay every month | Time to clear | Interest + GST |
|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 3 years 10 months | ₹1,27,711 |
| ₹10,000 | 1 year 2 months | ₹32,977 |
| ₹20,000 | 6 months | ₹14,864 |
| ₹50,000 | 3 months | ₹6,831 |
Going from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month cuts the interest by almost ₹95,000.
How to Clear Credit Card Debt Faster
New purchases attract interest too while a balance is pending.
Every extra rupee goes straight to reducing the balance.
Card EMIs usually carry a lower rate. Check the processing fee and GST first.
A personal loan or a loan against an FD usually costs far less than card interest.
Some cards offer a low rate for a few months on transferred balances.
Once you are clear, auto-pay the total due so it never happens again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is credit card interest calculated in India?
Banks charge a monthly interest rate, usually around 3–3.75%, on the unpaid balance from the transaction date, calculated daily. GST of 18% is added on the interest.
Is GST charged on credit card interest?
Yes. GST at 18% applies to the interest and to fees such as late payment charges.
What happens if I pay only the minimum amount due?
You avoid a late fee, but interest is charged on the full unpaid balance. Paying only the minimum can take decades to clear the debt and cost several times the original amount.
Do I lose the interest-free period if I do not pay in full?
Usually yes. Most banks charge interest on new purchases from the purchase date until the outstanding balance is fully cleared.
Is converting a credit card bill into EMI a good idea?
It is often cheaper than revolving the balance because EMI rates are usually lower. Compare the total cost including the processing fee and GST.
Does carrying a balance affect my credit score?
A high balance compared to your credit limit can lower your score, and missed or late payments hurt it more. Paying on time and keeping usage low helps.
